The Duties of “God” and the Lessons of a Pandemic
Let us see the duties of “God,” who has created this universe purposefully. He would never wish to see the destruction of His own creation before His eyes. If an enemy is visible, everyone can identify it and fight it with a suitable weapon. But when the enemy is invisible, the situation becomes entirely different. Then perhaps God has to act in His own mysterious way to protect His creation.
In such a carnivorous pandemic, the situation is like a war without guns and bullets. The enemy is invisible, yet its presence can be felt everywhere. In a war situation, everyone has to apply his or her own intelligence to safeguard oneself as well as others. There is no place for carelessness because the safety of one person can be connected with the safety of many others.
We can live without air for only a few minutes, without water for some days, and without food for perhaps several weeks. But without the divine force that sustains life, can we even imagine existence for a second? Whatever we may call it—God, nature, consciousness or the supreme energy—it remains beyond our complete understanding.
Perhaps this difficult period is also asking humanity to become humble.
We had started believing that science, technology and human intelligence could solve almost every problem. We built enormous cities, travelled across continents, entered space and created machines capable of performing increasingly complex tasks. Yet a microscopic and invisible organism was enough to bring the movement of the entire world almost to a standstill.
Nature, meanwhile, received an unexpected opportunity to breathe.
During the lockdown, when human activity was reduced, nature seemed to reclaim some of the space that had been occupied by us. The air in many places appeared clearer, the noise of traffic diminished, and the natural world became more noticeable. It was almost as if nature was quietly reminding us that it also has a right to exist.
Perhaps the relationship between human beings and nature will be understood differently in the future.
We may eventually realize that nature is not merely a resource for human consumption. We are part of nature, and our survival is deeply connected with its balance. If we continue to exploit it without limits, the consequences may return to us in forms that we cannot predict.
This pandemic may therefore become a lesson—not only in medicine, but also in humanity.
It teaches us that individual responsibility matters. It teaches us that our actions can affect people whom we may never meet. It teaches us that life is interconnected. And perhaps, above all, it reminds us that human beings are not as powerful as they sometimes believe themselves to be.
Maybe God does not always protect His creation by removing every difficulty. Perhaps sometimes the greater protection lies in giving human beings the intelligence to understand a situation, the courage to face it, and the compassion to protect one another.
The invisible enemy has made us see something that was always visible but rarely understood: life is interconnected.
Perhaps after this crisis, humanity will not return exactly to the life it had before. Perhaps we will carry with us a greater respect for nature, a deeper appreciation of human relationships, and a more humble understanding of our own existence.
Maybe this is the hidden message of this extraordinary period.
The world has been forced to stop.
Nature has been given a chance to breathe.
And humanity has been given a chance to think.
What will we learn from it?
