Rays of hope 27.04.2020
The world is going to change. Perhaps it has already begun to change in ways that we cannot fully understand. The strength of nature has been proved beyond doubt. In a matter of a short period, what we considered permanent, secure, and firmly established has shown how fragile it actually is. Nothing is permanent here; perhaps this is one of the greatest truths that this period has reminded us of.
Sometimes I feel that humanity is moving towards something that resembles the ancient ages described in our traditions—perhaps somewhere between Dwapara and Treta, where the patterns of life, society, and consciousness were very different from what we know today. Maybe the future will not simply be a continuation of the present. Perhaps it will be a completely different chapter of human existence.
The fusion of cultures that we celebrate today may, in the future, become restricted or even discouraged. The ways in which people meet, interact, travel, and socialise may change considerably. The ordinary interaction of two eyes—the simple human exchange through which we recognise another person, understand their emotions, and establish a connection—might become limited, while the symbolic “third eye” may become increasingly important. Technology, surveillance, virtual communication, and artificial intelligence may create a world where seeing without truly meeting becomes normal, and knowing about someone becomes easier than actually knowing them.
Sometimes I also have the strange feeling that our freedom may one day be restricted in ways that we cannot yet imagine. Animals and birds may appear to possess greater freedom than human beings, moving according to their instincts while we remain surrounded by rules, systems, boundaries, screens, and invisible controls. We may have greater technological power, yet less freedom of movement, less privacy, and perhaps even less freedom of thought.
Fear may become one of the greatest sources of transition. Fear changes societies quickly. Fear of illness, fear of loss, fear of uncertainty, fear of one another, and even fear of the future can influence human behaviour more powerfully than reason. Perhaps many of the changes that are coming will not be driven merely by wisdom or progress, but by our collective fear.
And somewhere in all of this, I feel that we have become separated from our own roots. We have moved so far from nature, from simplicity, from community, and perhaps even from ourselves, that we sometimes no longer recognise where we truly belong. We have created enormous systems to make life easier, yet those very systems may be making our existence more complicated.
Perhaps this period is not merely a crisis. Perhaps it is also a mirror.
It is showing us what we have become, what we have forgotten, and what we may need to rediscover.
Maybe the future will not be about going forward alone. Maybe, in some strange way, it will also be about looking backward—towards our roots, towards nature, towards balance, and towards those deeper values that were once considered essential to human life.
There are still many questions.
There are still many uncertainties.
And perhaps the answers are not meant to come today.
Time will reveal them.
