The Economy, Capitalism, and the Forgotten Workers
In a world driven by capitalism, the economy often appears to lack a truly stable foundation. Even a slight disturbance can expose its underlying weaknesses, making it behave like an unpredictable and unnatural entity. The pandemic has demonstrated just how fragile the economic system can be, bringing businesses, livelihoods, and established economic activities to the brink of collapse.
Governments across the world have been trying to revive their economies by providing financial assistance and announcing relief packages. These measures have brought a sense of optimism to many business communities. Stock markets have begun to rise and fluctuate with renewed energy, while those with sufficient resources and opportunities have started planning how to capitalize on the emerging situation.
Meanwhile, intellectuals and economic experts have resumed their discussions about market indices, wholesale price indices, and other economic indicators. Their conversations often create the impression that the economy is recovering and that its essential problems have been addressed. But do these numbers truly reflect the condition of ordinary people? Can economic recovery be considered complete when millions are still struggling to secure their livelihoods?
On the other side of this economic landscape, private-sector employees and workers are beginning to feel betrayed and neglected. Many feel that their contribution to the development of the nation has been overlooked, even though their labour keeps businesses running and supports the broader economy. Despite their disappointment, they continue to struggle, determined to survive and move forward through greater effort and perseverance.
They no longer seem to expect meaningful rewards or recognition for their hard work. For many, hope itself has become a luxury. Yet they continue to work, not necessarily because they trust the system, but because life leaves them with few alternatives.
Any sensible person understands that an economy cannot survive without labour and workers. Financial assistance may revive businesses, stock markets may register impressive gains, and economic indicators may show encouraging trends, but none of these achievements can be sustained without the people whose hands and minds keep the system functioning.
An economy should not be judged solely by the rise of its markets or the recovery of its businesses. Its real strength lies in the dignity of labour, the security of livelihoods, and the fair distribution of opportunities and rewards. If economic recovery benefits only those who already possess wealth and influence, while workers continue to bear the burden of uncertainty, then the recovery remains incomplete.
We watch these developments through the small opening of our humble hut, holding on to the hope that the next morning will bring something more natural, more humane, and more honest. We hope for a world in which economic progress is measured not merely by figures and indices, but by the well-being of the people who make that progress possible.
